Olive Avocado uses your device's camera to scan barcodes and, if you choose to use it, to photograph a plate of food. Barcode scanning happens instantly on-device; nothing is stored from that process beyond the barcode number itself.
When you scan a barcode, it's sent to Open Food Facts, a free, open, crowd-sourced product database, to retrieve the product's name, ingredients, and nutrition information. This is a third-party service with its own privacy policy.
To give you a personalised verdict, the scanned product's details and your stated health priorities (e.g. which nutrients matter most to you) are sent to Google's Gemini AI via our own server-side relay. We do not store this data ourselves beyond what's needed to serve the response; Google's own privacy policy governs their processing of the request.
If you use the "Analyze a plate" feature, the photo you take is sent to Google's Gemini AI (via our relay) to estimate the dish, ingredients, and calories. This is a visual estimate, not a verified fact โ we do not store the photo ourselves, but it is processed by Google's AI to generate the estimate.
If a barcode isn't in Open Food Facts yet, you can photograph the product (front, ingredients, and nutrition table) and submit its name and brand. These photos and details are sent to Open Food Facts through our server-side relay, using a single app-level contributor account, and become part of Open Food Facts' public, open database โ available to anyone, including other apps built on the same data. Only submit photos of products you're comfortable contributing publicly.
You can add profiles for other household members, each with their own health priorities and allergens to avoid. All profiles, preferences, and your scan history/diary are stored locally on your device only. We do not operate a user account system and do not store this on our own servers.
We do not use advertising SDKs or analytics trackers ourselves.
Since your preferences and history are stored locally, you can delete them at any time from within the app's settings, or remove all data by uninstalling the app.
